The Mosquito Band


The mosquito and images represent the characters who acted in a “operatic burlesque” put on by “The Manhattan Athletic Club Theater” during April in the year 1894.

Cassius Coolidge planned and wrote the opera, titled King Gallinipper, where Gallinipper was the mosquito king of all Jersey.  He also designed the costumes and scenery as well.

 It dealt with eliminating a mosquito epidemic that New York and New Jersey were experiencing at the time.

 The story was of the marital and amorous adventures of certain human tourists in the realm of Gallinipper, King of the Mosquitoes. The scene is laid in Box Hollow Park, New Jersey, and in the Mosquito Palace. Over sixty persons took part in the play,
